About
Ko Tanaka is a Japanese composer/conductor/Musical Theater Writer who was born in Saga, Japan. He has been writing and producing his music for more than 10 titles of theater works in Japan.
After a couple of years of composing for Japanese game company, he decided to become a musical theater composer/writer, he released and performed his first original musical “The Monster” in Nagoya, Japan. After he moved to the U.S. he studied Broadway-style composing and lyric writing with Michael Wartofsky, Bill Elliott (Tony Award Winner), conducting with Peter Cokkinias, Eric Stern (Grammy Award Winner).
In 2019, he has been appointed as one of the conductors of Berklee Musical Theater Orchestra and performed his original musical tune “The Monster” at Berklee Performance Center(1,215 seat theater). After his performance, he received contact from one of the faculty member Julius P. Williams (President of the Conductors Guild, Residence Composer of Boston Symphony Orchestra) to be taught his private lesson.
He recently has been appointed composer for Off-Broadway Musical “Poupelle of Chimney Town” a new musical based on the bestselling Japanese picture book. The musical will open Off-Broadway in 2021 and the animated feature film "Poupelle of Chimney Town" will be released in December 2020.
He has been working as a theater arranger for the college/university courses such as Emmerson College, and American University.
He is a first-class member of the Dramatists Guild of America since 2019.

16歳の時、吹奏楽部へ入部したことをきっかけにパーカッションを、翌年より独学で作曲を始める。3年後の2010年、HAL名古屋 ミュージック学科入学。
2011年、舞台演出家 渡部剛己の目に留まり名古屋・東京で舞台演劇の作曲活動を開始。
2014年より音楽クリエイターとして日本のアミューズメント系企業で勤務。数々のタイトルに携わり、プロデュースや音響演出法を学ぶ。並行して舞台作曲も継続し、日本最大の国際芸術祭”あいちトリエンナーレ”(2013, 2019)等への出展公演を続ける。
退社後、自身の活動を米ミュージカル界に定め、2016年末に初のショートミュージカル作品『ある怪物の』を『七ツ寺共同スタジオ』劇場で上演。その後奨学金を得て渡米、バークリー音楽大学へ入学。
渡米後、ブロードウェイでの舞台演出・音楽技法や英作詞法をマイケル・ワトフスキーに学び、トニー賞受賞編曲家のビル・エリオットらに作編曲を、ピーター・コキニアス、グラミー賞受賞指揮者のエリック・スタンなどに指揮法を長期にわたり師事。
2019年バークリー・ミュージカルシアター・オーケストラの指揮者に抜擢。オリジナルミュージカル『ある怪物を』を英訳した"The Monster"を自身の指揮にて米初演。終演後、ボストン交響楽団レジデンス作曲家のジュリアス・ウィリアムスから連絡を受け、無償での個人レッスンをオファーされる。
同年11月、全米演劇著作者組合(Dramatists Guild of America)へファーストクラスメンバーとして加入。
2020年、絵本『えんとつ町のプペル』の著者・西野亮廣氏を原作・脚本に迎えた完全英語のオフブロードウェイミュージカル『Poupelle of Chimney Town』の作曲・音楽監督に抜擢。
また同時期よりミュージカル・演劇の名門校である米エマーソン大学（ボストン）、アメリカン大学（ワシントンD.C.）からの委託によりミュージカルシアターアレンジャーとして活動を開始。
以降、ほとり企画『劇的茶屋 謳う死神』作曲などで多くメディアに取り上げられ、日米のミュージカル・歌劇作品の作編曲・音楽プランニングを広く手がける。
バークリーで培ったブロードウェイスタイルの作編曲法と日本独特の哀愁ある繊細なメロディを組み合わせ、舞台における物語とのハイレベルな融合を目指す。
